The Basics
What Is the Japan Digital Nomad Visa?
The Japan Digital Nomad Visa is not a separate visa category on its own — officially, it falls under the residence status "Specified Activities" (特定活動), specifically:
- Designated Activity No. 53 — for the remote worker themselves
- Designated Activity No. 54 — for an accompanying spouse or child
It was created by the Japanese government and came into effect on March 31, 2024, to allow international remote workers to live in Japan temporarily while continuing to work for an employer or clients based overseas.
How it's different from other ways of staying in Japan
| Tourist Stay (90 days) | Digital Nomad Visa | Work Visa (e.g. Engineer/Humanities) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max stay | 90 days | 6 months | 1–5 years, renewable |
| Can renew? | No | No | Yes |
| Residence card issued? | No | No | Yes |
| Can work? | No | Yes — but only for overseas employers/clients | Yes, for a Japanese employer |
| Employer location | N/A | Must be outside Japan | Must be inside Japan |
The key idea: this visa is built for people who are not changing who they work for — you keep your existing overseas job or client contracts and simply relocate yourself to Japan for a defined window of time.

The Process
🛂 How to Apply
There are two paths to getting this status. Which one makes sense depends on your situation.
Option 1 — Apply from your home country
You (or a representative) submit a Certificate of Eligibility (COE, 在留資格認定証明書交付申請)
application. This can be done at your local Japanese embassy or consulate, or in some cases directly with
a regional immigration bureau if you're already coordinating from Japan.
→ Applying From Abroad vs. In Japan — Which Is Faster? →
Option 2 — Apply after arriving in Japan
Some applicants enter Japan on a short-term (tourist) stay first, then file the COE application with a
regional immigration bureau while in the country.
→ Full COE Application Walkthrough & Document Checklist →
What you'll need to prepare
- Application form (COE or Status Acquisition, depending on your situation)
- Passport photo (specified format)
- Description of your planned remote work activity in Japan
- Proof of income (tax certificate or income certificate, ¥10M+)
- Proof of current employment/business activity
- Insurance certificate + explanation of coverage (¥10M+ medical/injury)
What Goes Wrong
🚨 Common Reasons for Rejection
Based on how ISA reviews these applications, the most common issues are:
- Income documentation that doesn't clearly show ¥10M — tax certificates from your home country that don't translate cleanly, or income that fluctuates and isn't clearly "current"
- Vague description of remote work activity — ISA wants to see specifically what you'll be doing, for whom, and how it's structured
- Insurance that doesn't meet the ¥10M threshold or doesn't cover the full planned stay
- Unclear separation from Japan-based work — anything that looks like you'll also be doing paid work for a Japan-based entity

Money Matters
💴 Money Matters
Sending and receiving money while in Japan
Since you're being paid by overseas clients or employers while living in Japan, international money
transfers become part of your everyday life.
→ How to Send & Receive Money in Japan as a Digital Nomad →
Recommended: Wise — low-fee international transfers, useful for receiving overseas income while based in Japan.
Do I need insurance beyond my credit card?
Almost certainly, yes. Most credit card travel insurance in Japan caps out around 90 days — well short
of this visa's up-to-6-month duration — so it typically can't serve as your qualifying policy on its own.
→ Does My Credit Card's Insurance Qualify? →
Useful cards for daily life in Japan
Separately from the insurance requirement, a Japan-issued credit card is worth having for everyday spending, online shopping, and building a local payment history: Epos Card (see below) and Rakuten Card are both widely accepted and commonly held by long-term foreign residents. Neither should be relied on as your qualifying travel insurance for this visa — check their current travel insurance terms directly if considering them for that purpose.
Life in Japan
🏠 After You Arrive — Daily Life Without a Residence Card
Before diving into banking, SIM, and housing, one small but easy-to-forget item: Japan uses Type A plugs and 100V, which may not match your home country. A universal travel adapter is worth packing before you fly, since some short-term housing won't have one waiting for you.
Banking & SIM cards
Without a residence card, some of the usual onboarding steps in Japan get more complicated.
→ Banking & SIM Without a Residence Card →
Recommended: an eSIM you can activate before you land, so connectivity isn't blocked by the residence card issue on day one — JAPAN&GLOBAL eSIM. Prefer a physical SIM or don't want to depend on eSIM compatibility? A prepaid SIM card ordered before you fly is a straightforward alternative — some come with a Japanese phone number, which some banking and delivery services still expect. For a shared or family connection, a portable mobile Wi-Fi router is also worth considering. If you'd rather set up a physical SIM once you're settled, Rakuten Mobile is also worth comparing.
Short-term housing
A 6-month, non-renewable stay calls for different housing options than a standard lease.
→ Short-Term Housing Options in Japan →
Recommended: share-house style housing built for shorter stays without the usual key money and guarantor requirements — Cross One Room / Oak House. For anything you need to buy or sell before you leave — furniture, small appliances, electronics — Mercari is the standard marketplace in Japan for exactly this kind of short-term, temporary need.
Coworking spaces
→ Coworking Spaces for Remote Workers in Japan →
Recommended: flexible coworking memberships with locations across major Japanese cities — Regus.
Family
👨👩👧 Bringing Your Family
Your spouse or child can accompany you under Designated Activity No. 54, provided they
meet their own set of requirements (including the same nationality condition and their own qualifying
insurance).

Having a child while in Japan?
If your child is born in Japan during your stay, a separate Status Acquisition application is required.
