Overview

What Is the Highly Skilled Professional (高度専門職) Visa?

The Highly Skilled Professional (高度専門職, HSP) status is a points-based residence status designed to attract highly qualified foreign professionals to Japan. It is the most powerful accelerator for Permanent Residency available in the Japanese immigration system.

The two key PR thresholds:

Score PR Eligible After What It Means
70–79 points 3 years with 70+ qualifying points 7 years faster than the standard 10-year route
80+ points 1 year with 80+ qualifying points 9 years faster than the standard route
💡 A qualifying points history may support the PR fast-track

You do not always need to currently hold the “Highly Skilled Professional” status to use the points-based PR exception. You must be able to document that you met the required score at the relevant reference dates and satisfy the other PR conditions. Confirm the current Immigration Services Agency requirements and obtain case-specific advice before applying.

HSP Sub-Types

高度専門職1号 イ・ロ・ハ — Which Type Are You?

HSP status is divided into three sub-types under 高度専門職1号. Each uses the same point table but covers different professional activities. Which type you apply under determines what activities you are permitted to conduct in Japan.

高度専門職1号イ
Advanced Academic Research
For researchers, university faculty, and those conducting advanced research activities. Less common among corporate professionals.
  • University professors and associate professors
  • Government or corporate research scientists
  • R&D roles at designated research institutions
高度専門職1号ロ
Advanced Specialised / Technical
The most common type. For professionals in technical and specialised business roles — essentially the highly skilled version of the 技人国 work visa.
  • Software engineers, data scientists, product managers
  • Finance, consulting, legal, medical professionals
  • Most corporate professionals at Japanese companies
高度専門職1号ハ
Advanced Business Management
For entrepreneurs, company directors, and business managers. Overlaps with Business Manager status but uses the HSP points system for eligibility.
  • Company founders and CEOs
  • Corporate directors managing Japan operations
  • Senior executives with strategic responsibility
💡 高度専門職2号 — After 3 years of 1号

After holding 高度専門職1号 for 3 years, you can upgrade to 高度専門職2号 — which removes virtually all restrictions on permitted activities in Japan. Almost everything is permitted, making it the most flexible status short of PR. Many people use 2号 as a stepping stone before PR.

The Complete Table

③ Annual Salary — 年収
Annual Salary (Japan) Notes Points

¥9,000,000 – ¥10,000,000 35

¥4,000,000 – ¥5,000,000 10
¥3,000,000 – ¥4,000,000 Only applies if applicant is under 30 years old. 5
⚠️ Minimum salary threshold: ¥3,000,000

An applicant earning under ¥3,000,000 per year cannot qualify for HSP status regardless of scores in other categories. The minimum salary threshold is an absolute floor, not a points deduction.

④ Age — 年齢
Age at Time of Application Notes Points
Under 30 years old Age is assessed at the date the application is submitted. 15
30 to 34 years old 10
35 to 39 years old 5

⚠️ Birthday timing matters — apply before crossing a threshold

Each age bracket crossing costs 5 points. If you are currently 29 and have 70+ points, apply before your 30th birthday. If you are 34 with 70–74 points, losing age points at 35 could push you below the threshold.

Why Get HSP Status

Benefits of Highly Skilled Professional Status

The PR fast track is the most well-known benefit, but HSP status comes with a range of additional privileges that make everyday life in Japan significantly more flexible.

PR in 1–3 Years
The primary benefit. 70+ pts = PR after 3 years. 80+ pts = PR after 1 year. No other standard route comes close.
💼
Multiple Activities Permitted
Unlike standard work visas, HSP status explicitly permits engaging in activities across multiple permitted categories — e.g., working a primary job while also consulting or teaching.
👨‍👩‍👧
Bring Parents to Japan
Under certain conditions (child under 7, income requirements met), HSP status allows one parent to be invited to Japan for childcare — unavailable to standard work visa holders. See the full dependent visa rules →
🏠
Spouse Can Work Freely
The HSP holder's spouse can work in any job without the standard work status restrictions — as long as the HSP holder is actually using their status in Japan.
🪪
5-Year Visa Grant
HSP status typically comes with a 5-year period of stay — longer than most work visa grants. This satisfies the April 2027 PR requirement automatically.
📋
Simplified Procedures
HSP holders benefit from priority processing at immigration bureaus and some simplified administrative procedures at Japanese government agencies.
Getting HSP Status

How to Change to HSP Status

Most people applying for HSP are already in Japan on a work visa and switching via a Change of Status application. The process is the same as any Change of Status — but the eligibility assessment is based entirely on your HSP points score.

Step Action Notes
1 Calculate your precise score Use this calculator, then verify against the official ISA table for any research achievement sub-categories that may apply
2 Confirm your sub-type (1号イ・ロ・ハ) Match your current job activities to the correct sub-type
3 Gather supporting documents for each point category Degree certificates, employment history, salary records (源泉徴収票), JLPT certificate, employer METI designation certificate if applicable
4 File Change of Status application At the Immigration Bureau for your registered address
5 Document your score history for the PR route Keep evidence showing your qualifying points at the required reference dates; holding HSP status may help document the timeline but is not the only route

Frequently Asked

HSP Points FAQ

Reviewed by a licensed Administrative Scrivener based on real cases.

You need 5 more points. The fastest single lever is JLPT: if you don't have N2, getting it adds 10 points instantly. If you already have N2, upgrading to N1 adds 5 more. The next fastest option is a salary increase to the next ¥1M bracket (e.g., from ¥6.9M to ¥7M), which adds 5 points. If your employer is not on the METI list but you could join a METI-designated company, that adds 10 points. Check whether your current employer qualifies as an SME — if so, that's another +10 pts. Among all these, the most controllable is the JLPT route.
Annual salary for HSP purposes is the gross annual income (税引前) as stated in your employment contract or reflected in your withholding tax certificate (源泉徴収票). Bonuses that are part of your regular annual compensation are generally included. However, irregular one-time payments, allowances paid in kind, stock options, or benefits in non-cash form are handled differently — consult the official ISA guidance or a specialist if your compensation structure is complex.
At 40, you lose the 5-point age bonus for being 35–39. Your score drops from 74 to 69 — which is below the 70-point threshold. So yes — in your specific situation, you must obtain HSP status before your 40th birthday or you will no longer qualify for the 3-year fast track. Apply as soon as your documents are ready. The PR qualifying period starts from your HSP grant date, so getting the status even a few months before your birthday protects your eligibility.
No — ¥3,000,000 per year is an absolute minimum salary threshold for HSP status. Even with a perfect score in all other categories, an applicant earning under ¥3M is ineligible. This threshold exists because HSP is specifically designed for highly-compensated professionals contributing economically to Japan. There are no exceptions.
Your employer needs to provide supporting documents — primarily an employment certificate (在職証明書) and salary information. If your company is on the METI designated list and you are claiming those bonus points, you will need the METI designation certificate. Most cooperating employers can provide these within a few days. Technically the application is filed by the individual employee (or their scrivener), not by the company — but employer cooperation for documentation is essential.
An 80+ point score may qualify for the one-year points-based PR exception once you can document the required score at the relevant reference dates. You do not always need to change to HSP status first, but you must meet the other PR requirements, including tax, pension and conduct conditions. Confirm the current official rules and your evidence before applying.
Know your score — then act on it

Don't leave PR years on the table

Most people who qualify for HSP status don't realise it — and spend unnecessary years on the standard 10-year route. Use this calculator, then get a professional review of your application strategy.
