Japan Digital Nomad Visa: The 6-Month Rule Explained

🏛️ Admin Scrivener Supervised 📅 Last updated: July 2026 🗾 Japan only

The 6-Month Rule, Explained What "non-renewable" actually means — and what it doesn't

"Non-renewable" makes this visa sound more rigid than it is. There's a real hard limit — but there's also a normal, permitted way to take a short trip out of Japan mid-stay without losing your status, and a clear (if slow) path to coming back for another 6 months later. Here's exactly where the lines are.

⚠️ Two different things get confused here. "Leaving Japan temporarily during your stay" and "your 6 months running out" are not the same situation, and they're handled completely differently. Mixing them up is the most common source of confusion with this visa.

Based directly on the Immigration Services Agency's official Q&A for this status (Q3 and Q6). Last verified: July 2026.

The Hard Limit

The Rule, Precisely

Per ISA's official Q&A:

  • The maximum stay under this status is 6 months
  • No extension or renewal application exists for this status — there is no mechanism to extend past 6 months
  • Once you've left Japan, you can apply again under this same status after 6 months have passed since your departure

That's it — no exceptions, no case-by-case extensions. If you need more time in Japan than 6 months allows, this specific visa isn't the mechanism for that; a different visa category would need to apply.

Not the Same Thing

Taking a Short Trip Mid-Stay Is a Completely Different Situation

If you want to leave Japan briefly during your 6 months — a weekend trip to Korea, visiting family, a work trip — and come back, this is not a renewal question. It's handled through the same re-entry system available to any mid/long-term resident:

Re-entry permit / deemed re-entry permit If you leave Japan intending to return, and you come back before your original stay period expires, you can maintain your status the whole time — the same re-entry mechanism available to other resident categories applies here too. This has nothing to do with the 6-month non-renewal rule; it's simply about not abandoning your status by leaving without the right paperwork.

The distinction that matters: returning before your 6 months are up (fine, use re-entry) vs. your 6 months actually ending (hard stop, no renewal, must leave and wait).

Side by Side

Quick Comparison

Short trip during your 6 months Your 6 months ending
What it is A temporary departure with intent to return The end of your permitted stay
What you need Re-entry permit / deemed re-entry permit Nothing — there's no renewal to apply for
Can you come back? Yes, anytime before your stay period expires Only after 6 months have passed since departure, via a fresh application
Does your status continue? Yes, uninterrupted No — it ends

Planning Ahead

What This Means for How You Plan Your Stay

  • Treat 6 months as a firm deadline, not a starting point for negotiation — there's no case where ISA extends it
  • Build your departure into your plans from day one — flights, housing end dates, and any local commitments should assume no extension is coming
  • If you want to return later, budget for a full 6-month gap outside Japan before you can apply again under this same status
  • If your situation might change (e.g. a Japan-based job offer emerges during your stay), that would require a completely different visa process — not an extension of this one

One More Thing

A Related Detail Worth Knowing: Tax

Per ISA's Q&A, income earned from your remote work activity while in Japan is generally tax-exempt in Japan if your stay stays within 183 days in the relevant tax year (or any continuous 12-month period), under most of Japan's tax treaties — though exact conditions vary by country. Since the visa itself caps you at 6 months, most applicants naturally stay within this window, but it's worth confirming against the specific tax treaty for your country.

Frequently Asked

FAQ

Can I extend my stay if I have a good reason (e.g. an ongoing project)?

No. There is no extension mechanism for this status, regardless of the reason. The 6-month limit is fixed by the official rules with no case-by-case exceptions.

If I take a 2-week trip home during my stay, does that reset my 6 months?

No — a temporary departure with a re-entry permit doesn't reset or extend anything. Your original 6-month period continues counting from your original entry, regardless of short trips in and out.

Do I need to apply for a re-entry permit, or does it happen automatically?

Japan's "deemed re-entry permit" system generally covers departures of one year or less without a separate application, as long as you have a valid passport and status, and return within your authorized stay period. Confirm the current process at the airport or with an administrative scrivener if you're unsure.

After I leave, does the 6-month waiting period start from my departure date or my visa's expiration date?

It's measured from your actual date of departure from Japan, per ISA's official Q&A.
