Unlike permanent residents, most foreign residents in Japan must periodically renew their period of stay to continue living here legally. Missing a deadline, submitting incomplete documents, or failing to meet current requirements can lead to serious consequences — including loss of legal status.

What Is Visa Renewal in Japan?
What people call "visa renewal" is officially called an Extension of Period of Stay (在留期間更新許可申請). The procedure allows you to continue living in Japan under your current Status of Residence after your current period of stay expires.
It is important to understand the difference between two things that are often confused:
| Term | What It Means | What You Manage |
|---|---|---|
| Visa (査証) | Stamp in passport permitting entry into Japan — issued by Japanese embassy abroad | Not this — this was handled when you first came to Japan |
| Status of Residence (在留資格) | Legal category defining your permitted activities and period of stay — shown on your residence card | Yes — this is what you renew |
Common statuses that require periodic renewal include:
- Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services (技人国) — the most common work status
- Highly Skilled Professional (高度専門職)
- Business Manager (経営・管理)
- Intra-Company Transferee (企業内転勤)
- Student (留学)
- Dependent (家族滞在)
- Spouse or Child of Japanese National (日本人の配偶者等)
- Long-Term Resident (定住者)
Most renewals are approved. The key is applying on time with complete documentation and a clean compliance record — particularly regarding tax and social insurance payments.
When Can You Apply for Visa Renewal?
Applications can be submitted from approximately 3 months before the expiration date shown on your residence card. In 2026, with processing times significantly longer than in previous years, applying on the first possible day is no longer just a suggestion — it is the recommended standard.
Many foreign residents wait until 4–6 weeks before expiration. Given 2026 processing times of 2–4 months (standard) and 4–6 months (complex cases), this leaves no buffer for additional document requests or delays.
Recommended Timeline
Who Is Eligible for Renewal?
Immigration authorities assess whether you continue to meet the requirements of your current status. There are three main areas of evaluation:
① Activity Compliance
You must continue performing the activities permitted by your status. For example: work visa holders must continue doing the type of professional work their status covers; students must be enrolled and attending; spouse visa holders must maintain their qualifying relationship.
② Legal and Administrative Compliance
Since 2024, immigration officers verify the following records for every renewal application:
- Income tax and residence tax (住民税) — fully paid, no arrears
- National pension (国民年金) or employees' pension (厚生年金) — enrolled and current
- Health insurance — enrolled with no gaps
- No criminal record or immigration violations
- No history of overstay or unauthorized work
- All required notifications filed (e.g., 14-day job change notification)
③ Financial Stability
Applicants should demonstrate the ability to support themselves and any dependants. There is no published income threshold, but a general guideline is approximately ¥3 million or more annually for work visa holders.
From April 2026, Japanese language proficiency (JLPT N2 or equivalent) is officially reviewed as part of most work visa renewals. It is not automatic rejection without N2, but it is a negative factor. Include a study plan and proof of enrollment if you don't have N2 yet.
Documents Commonly Required for Renewal
Required documents vary by visa category and company classification. The following is an overview — always verify the latest requirements on the ISA official website before applying.

How Long Does Visa Renewal Take?
Processing times in 2026 are significantly longer than the official estimates suggest. Plan accordingly.
| Application Type | Tokyo Bureau | Regional Bureaus |
|---|---|---|
| Standard renewal — same employer, clean record | 2–3 months | 1–2 months |
| Renewal after job change or complexity | 4–6 months | 2–4 months |
| COE (new hire from overseas) | 4–7 months | 2–4 months |
Receiving a request for additional documents does not automatically mean there is a problem. It is a routine part of the review process — respond promptly and completely.
If you filed before your expiry date, you are protected by the special permission period (特例期間). Request an extension sticker from the Immigration Bureau after your expiry date passes — it proves your legal status to employers, banks, and landlords.
