Internet & Mobile Setup in Japan
SIM, eSIM & Home Wi-Fi Guide 2026

Getting connected in Japan means juggling two separate things: a mobile plan for your phone, and a home internet line for your apartment. They work completely differently — and home internet can take weeks to install, which catches almost everyone off guard.

  • Mobile SIM vs. eSIM — which is faster to set up on arrival
  • Home fiber internet: expect 2 weeks to 2 months for installation
  • A bridge solution for the gap — pocket Wi-Fi and mobile routers
  • What you need to sign up (usually just your residence card)
  • Prepaid vs. contract plans — which fits short vs. long stays
  • "Hikari mansion" buildings — sometimes no installation wait at all
⚠️
Home fiber internet is not fast to set up. Installation typically takes 2 weeks to 2 months depending on your building and the season — applying the week you move in usually means weeks without home Wi-Fi. Plan ahead, or use a bridge solution. See the bridge options →

Two Separate Things

Mobile Plan and Home Internet Are Not the Same Contract

It's easy to assume "getting internet" is one task. In Japan it's really two: a mobile phone plan (SIM or eSIM) for your phone, and a separate home internet line (usually fiber, 光回線) for your apartment's Wi-Fi router. Most people need both, and they're set up completely independently.

Mobile SIM / eSIM Home Fiber Internet
Setup speed eSIM: often same-day. Physical SIM: 1–3 days by mail, or same-day at a store 2 weeks to 2 months, depending on building and season
What you need Residence card; sometimes a Japanese bank account or credit card for postpaid plans Residence card, lease/proof of address, payment method
Best for Immediate connectivity, short stays, backup connection Heavy home use, gaming, video calls, multiple devices
Typical cost ¥1,000–4,000/month depending on data allowance ¥4,000–6,000/month, often with a setup fee
Step One

What Do You Actually Need?

Most people arriving in Japan need all three of the following, in roughly this order of urgency:

Day 1 — most urgent
A working phone connection
For maps, translation apps, contacting your landlord/employer, and receiving SMS verification codes for other sign-ups (bank account, delivery apps, etc.). An eSIM you activate before or immediately after landing is the fastest option.

Week 1–2
A longer-term mobile plan
Once settled, switch from a short-term prepaid/travel plan to a standard mobile contract if you're staying long-term — usually cheaper per month and includes a Japanese phone number for official use.

Apply immediately, arrives in weeks
Home internet
Apply for home fiber internet as early as possible — ideally before you even arrive, if you already have a confirmed address — since the installation wait is the single biggest bottleneck in this whole process.
📱 Mobile

Mobile SIM & eSIM

eSIM is generally the fastest way to get connected — no physical card, no waiting for mail, and many can be activated before you even land in Japan.

💡 An eSIM you can set up before you land

A short-term data eSIM gets you online from the moment you land — useful for maps, translation, and contacting your landlord before you've sorted out a longer-term plan.

Moving to a Standard Mobile Plan

Once you're settled, a standard postpaid mobile contract is usually cheaper long-term and gives you a proper Japanese phone number. Requirements typically include your residence card and a Japanese bank account or credit card for billing.

💡 A carrier that's straightforward to sign up for as a foreign resident

Rakuten Mobile is commonly used by foreign residents for its online sign-up process and flexible plans, without requiring a long-term contract lock-in on most plans.

🏠 Home Internet

Home Fiber Internet — Plan for the Wait

Fiber internet (光回線) requires a physical installation — either a technician visit to run cabling to your unit, or in some buildings, a simpler setup because the building is already wired.

Building Type What Happens Typical Wait
光マンション (Fiber-ready building) Building already has fiber infrastructure — often just a modem setup, sometimes no technician visit at all Days to 1–2 weeks
Standard apartment / house A technician visits to run a new line, usually 1–2 hours on-site 2 weeks to 2 months (longer in March–April moving season)
💡 A provider that's foreigner-friendly and offers clear pricing

BIGLOBE光 is a widely-used fiber provider with straightforward online sign-up — good for comparing against your building's default option if you have a choice of provider.

⚠️ Ask before you sign the lease — check if fiber is already installed

If avoiding the installation wait matters to you, ask your real estate agent whether the building is already fiber-wired (光配線方式) before signing. It's one of the few things that's much harder to fix after you've moved in.

The Gap

Bridging the Wait Between Move-In and Home Internet

If your fiber installation is weeks away, a pocket Wi-Fi / mobile router gives you a working home connection in the meantime — no technician visit, no waiting.

✅ A portable router that works the day it arrives

A pocket Wi-Fi / mobile router connects to the mobile network directly — no installation, no appointment. Useful as a bridge while your fiber line is being installed, or as your only connection if you move frequently or don't need heavy bandwidth.

Internet & Mobile FAQ

Reviewed by a licensed Administrative Scrivener based on real cases.

Travel eSIMs can typically be purchased and activated before you land, since they don't require a Japanese address or residence card. Standard postpaid mobile contracts generally require you to already be in Japan with a residence card and, often, a registered address — so plan on an eSIM for the first stretch and a standard plan once you're settled.
Many postpaid plans require either a Japanese bank account for auto-debit or a credit card for billing. Some providers accept overseas-issued credit cards; prepaid SIM plans generally don't require either, since you pay upfront. If you don't yet have a Japanese bank account, a prepaid plan or credit-card-billed postpaid plan can bridge the gap.
Unless your building already has fiber wiring in place, a technician needs to physically run a new line to your unit — and demand for these appointments regularly exceeds available slots, especially during the March–April moving season when large numbers of people relocate at once. Applying as early as possible, ideally before you move in, is the only real way to shorten the wait.
For light use (browsing, video calls, occasional streaming) a mobile router can work fine long-term and avoids the installation hassle entirely. For heavy use — multiple people, gaming, frequent large downloads, 4K streaming on multiple devices — fiber's stability and speed are usually worth the setup wait. Many people use a router as a bridge and switch to fiber once it's installed.
Just got your address confirmed?

Apply for home internet today — not move-in day

The installation wait is the single biggest delay in getting settled. Apply as early as your address is confirmed, even before you've moved in.
