What This Page Covers

What are Japan's family visas?

Japan has two separate visa categories for family, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes people make.

"日本人の配偶者等" (Spouse or Child of Japanese National) is for people married to a Japanese citizen, or the child of one. It comes with almost no work restrictions — you can work in any job, any industry, just like a Japanese citizen.

"家族滞在" (Dependent Visa) is for the spouse and children of someone in Japan on a work or student visa (not a Japanese citizen). It is fundamentally a non-working visa. Any work requires separate permission and is capped at 28 hours per week.

This page covers both paths: eligibility, required documents, common rejection reasons, what changes at major life events, and how family visas connect to Permanent Residency.

Two Different Paths

Spouse Visa vs. Dependent Visa — at a Glance

These are two entirely different visa categories with different rules. Confirming which one applies to you is the first step.

日本人の配偶者等 (Spouse of Japanese National) 家族滞在 (Dependent Visa)
Who it's for Spouse or child of a Japanese citizen Spouse or child of a foreign work/student visa holder
Work Unrestricted — any job, any industry Not permitted without 資格外活動許可; capped at 28 hrs/week
Visa length 6 months / 1 / 3 / 5 years Tied to the sponsor's visa — max 5 years, never longer than the sponsor's period
Tied to sponsor? No — independent status Yes — expires if the sponsor's visa ends
Path to PR The standard 10-year residency rule is waived; instead you need a genuine marriage of 3+ years and at least 1 year of continuous residence in Japan Counts toward residency, but doesn't itself grant an independent PR path

What's Reviewed for Each Visa

Immigration reviews different things depending on which category you're in. Both lists matter if your household includes both a Japanese-citizen spouse and dependent children from a prior status.

Spouse Visa — What's Reviewed

01
Genuine, Ongoing Marriage
Immigration reviews cohabitation records, communication history, and shared finances. A marriage that looks "on paper only" is the single biggest reason for refusal.
Most common rejection cause
02
Financial Stability
The Japanese spouse (or the couple jointly) needs to show they can support the household. No fixed income line, but consistent, documented income matters more than the amount.
Case by case
03
Tax & Social Insurance Paid
Same standard as PR: any gaps in health insurance, pension, or residence tax raise flags at renewal.
Strictly verified
04
No Immigration Violations
Overstays, unauthorized work, or false statements in a prior application weigh heavily against approval.
Hard requirement
05
Visa Length is Earned
First-time applicants are commonly granted 1 year. Longer grants (3 or 5 years) come with a consistent renewal history and stable cohabitation.
Builds over time
06
Reporting Obligations
A change of address, workplace, or divorce must be reported to Immigration within 14 days. Missing this is a compliance flag, even if unintentional.

Dependent Visa — What's Reviewed

01
Sponsor's Visa Status
The sponsor must hold a valid work or student visa. If the sponsor's status lapses, the Dependent Visa lapses with it.
Tied to sponsor
02
Genuine Dependent Relationship
Marriage certificate or birth certificate proving the relationship, translated where required.
Documentation-based
03
Sponsor's Ability to Support
Bank statements or income documents showing the sponsor can financially support the dependent(s).
Case by case
04
Age Limits for Children
Under 14 is generally straightforward. Ages 15–17 typically require proof of continued schooling. 18+ faces much stricter scrutiny.
Watch this at 18
05
Work Requires Separate Permission
資格外活動許可 (permission for activity outside status) is required for any paid work, capped at 28 hours per rolling 7-day period. Exceeding this is a visa violation, not just a technicality.
28 hrs/week cap
06
Not Available on Every Sponsor Visa
Notably, Specified Skilled Worker (特定技能) Type 1 generally does not allow the worker to bring family on a Dependent Visa. Check your sponsor's specific visa category first.

Common Family Visa Rejection / Renewal Problems

These are the actual reasons family visa applications and renewals are being delayed or refused, based on real consultation cases.

Problem #1
Separation without explanation
Living apart, even temporarily for work or family reasons, is a red flag if not explained with a written statement and supporting evidence.
Problem #2
Unpaid residence tax or pension gaps
Same as PR: these are now closely cross-checked at every renewal.
Problem #3
Working beyond the 28-hour limit
This is treated as an immigration violation, not a minor overstep, and can jeopardize future status changes.
Problem #4
Sponsor's visa lapses first
If the sponsor's work visa is not renewed in time, the Dependent Visa holder's status becomes unstable immediately.
Problem #5
Divorce not reported within 14 days
The 14-day notification rule applies even during a divorce. Missing it complicates any future application.
Problem #6
Child turning 18 without a status plan
A Dependent Visa doesn't automatically convert to anything at adulthood — this needs active planning before the current visa expires.

The Family Visa Journey

What to Expect — Step by Step

From before arrival to the path toward PR. Each stage has specific actions that determine whether your application succeeds.

Before Arrival
Confirm eligibility & prepare documents
Confirm the sponsor's visa category allows a Dependent Visa (特定技能1号は原則不可). Prepare the COE (Certificate of Eligibility) application with relationship proof.
First 1–3 Years
Register & build your record
Register at your local municipal office within 14 days of arrival. Keep cohabitation records (utility bills, photos, shared bank activity) — this becomes renewal evidence later.
Renewal Cycles
Maintain compliance every renewal
Each renewal reviews the same fundamentals: genuine relationship, tax/pension compliance, and (for Dependent Visa) the sponsor's status. Longer grants (3–5 years) come with a consistent track record.
Toward PR
Years on a family visa add up
The standard 10-year PR residency rule is waived for spouses of Japanese nationals: instead, a genuine marriage of 3+ years combined with at least 1 year of continuous residence in Japan can satisfy this requirement.

Family Visa Questions — Answered

Yes, but only after obtaining 資格外活動許可 (permission for activity outside status), and capped at 28 hours per rolling 7-day period. Working without this permission, or beyond the limit, is treated as a visa violation.
The Dependent Visa itself doesn't automatically become invalid, but it remains tied to the sponsor holding a valid work visa. If the sponsor's new job requires a status change, the Dependent Visa holder's status should be reviewed at the same time.
It counts toward the general years-of-residence requirement, but a Dependent Visa itself doesn't carry the same fast-track routes as a Spouse Visa. Each case should be assessed individually.
Separation without divorce is reviewed carefully. Immigration wants to see either a return to cohabitation or a documented, honest explanation. Silence or inconsistent addresses is the riskiest option.
Start planning at least 6 months before their 18th birthday. Depending on their situation (student, working, etc.), a change of status may be required — a Dependent Visa does not automatically continue at adulthood.
Generally no — the family visa categories (both Spouse Visa and Dependent Visa) cover spouses and children, not parents or siblings. Parental sponsorship requires a different, much more limited route.
Not quite. The special rule waives the standard 10-year residency requirement for spouses of Japanese nationals, but you still need both conditions: a genuine, ongoing marriage of at least 3 years, and at least 1 continuous year of residence in Japan. Most applicants end up meeting both around the same time, since marriage and Japan residence often start together — but if you married abroad and moved to Japan later, the marriage clock and the residence clock may not align, so check your specific dates.
