How to Cancel Your Mobile Phone or SIM When Leaving Japan

Check the cancellation route, final charges and any remaining phone payments. Before your number stops working, update the accounts that use it for contact or SMS verification.

Direct answer

Use your mobile provider’s cancellation procedure.

Check the carrier or SIM provider named on your bill, then use its official online or shop procedure. Confirm when the line will stop, the final bill and any remaining device payments. Save the cancellation confirmation.

Deleting an eSIM, removing a SIM or leaving Japan is not confirmation that the contract has ended. If you want to keep your Japanese number when switching to another Japanese carrier, check the MNP transfer route before submitting an ordinary cancellation.

01 · Prepare

Before your number stops working

  1. Find your actual provider and plan. Have the contract-holder name, phone number, customer ID and registered address ready. Use the provider’s own procedure, including the separate route for an online-only brand if applicable.
  2. Check SMS-dependent accounts. Review banking, payment, shopping, work and other accounts that use this number. Use each service’s official process to update contact details or set up another supported verification method, and check that you can still sign in.
  3. Check your email and recovery contacts. Move important communications away from a carrier email address if you will lose access. Ask the carrier about any email-continuation option and its conditions if you need it.
  4. Plan your last day of use. Ask when cancellation becomes effective; do not assume you can reserve a future date. Arrange another connection for travel, bookings and remaining procedures.
  5. Check money still owed. Ask about final monthly and usage charges, cancellation fees if applicable, phone installments, device-return programs and paid options.
Keep your number when changing carrier? Use the provider’s Mobile Number Portability (MNP) instructions. An ordinary cancellation can put the number you want to transfer at risk. This guide focuses on ending service when leaving Japan; it does not promise overseas number retention.

02 · Choose your next step

How would you like to handle it?

03 · Do it yourself

Check the official route before paying for help.

Many routine cancellations can begin online or be handled at a shop. Check the current instructions, required identification and whether your contract is eligible. Use English support where available.

Official starting points checked on 5 October 2026
Provider Official procedure What to check
NTT DOCOMO Cancellation guide (English) Online and shop routes; online screens are Japanese. The guide links to a separate ahamo procedure
au Cancellation and MNP guide (Japanese) My au or shop procedure; timing of completion and remaining phone installments
SoftBank Mobile cancellation instructions (Japanese) My SoftBank or shop; some contracts and device types are excluded from web cancellation
Rakuten Mobile Cancellation guide (Japanese) The current procedure for your plan, options and SIM handling
Other SIM, eSIM or prepaid service Your provider’s official account, terms and support Whether the product expires or renews, notice requirements and any separate recurring subscription

These are starting points, not a complete provider list. Cancellation fees, final-month billing and required steps vary by plan and contract date. Do not assume every service is free to cancel or prorated.

Ask about cancellation and timing

帰国のため、携帯電話の契約を解約したいです。契約者名は〇〇、電話番号は〇〇です。解約手続きの方法と、電話やSMSが使えなくなる日時を教えてください。

“I would like to cancel my mobile contract because I am leaving Japan. The contract-holder name is [name] and the phone number is [number]. Please explain the procedure and when calls and SMS will stop working.”

This is example wording. Complete the carrier’s required submission and keep confirmation; a procedure enquiry alone does not cancel the line.

Ask whether you can choose the end date

〇月〇日に日本を出る予定です。解約日を指定できますか?できない場合、いつ手続きすればよいか教えてください。

“I plan to leave Japan on [date]. Can I specify the cancellation date? If not, please explain when I should complete the procedure.”

Confirm final charges and device payments

解約時の費用、端末代金の残額、最終請求の時期と支払い方法を教えてください。解約後も続くオプションや別契約はありますか?

“Please explain cancellation-related charges, the remaining device balance, and the timing and payment method for the final bill. Are there any options or separate contracts that will continue?”

Ask about verification or a shop visit

オンラインで手続きできますか?店舗への来店や本人確認が必要な場合、必要な書類を教えてください。

“Can I complete the procedure online? If a shop visit or identity check is required, please tell me which documents I need.”

Before finishing, confirm these points.

  • When the line, calls, data and SMS will stop
  • Whether cancellation is accepted or another submission is required
  • Final charges, billing date and payment method
  • Remaining phone payments and any device-program obligations
  • Options or subscriptions that require separate action
  • How to access bills and contact support after departure

04 · Final checks

Keep the records you will need after departure.

The mobile contract and the phone purchase are different.

DOCOMO and au’s official guidance explains that outstanding device payments can remain after line cancellation. Check your own balance, payment schedule and any device-return program before leaving. Do not assume cancelling service cancels the remaining phone payments.

SIM removal is not a cancellation receipt.

Follow the provider’s instructions for physical SIM or eSIM handling. Save the confirmation screen or email, date and reference before deleting account information or losing access.

Check paid services separately.

Review carrier email, insurance, subscriptions, extra lines and linked services. Ask which end with the line and which need a separate procedure. An app subscription may have its own billing arrangement.

Keep final-bill access and a working reply contact.

Ask how to receive and pay bills after departure. Update contact information through the official account procedure and keep relevant records until all final charges are settled.

05 · Keep the next step clear

Ready to stop your mobile service?

Tick an item once it is arranged. The ticks apply to this visit.

Continue with your departure tasks.

Questions

Mobile cancellation questions

Can I cancel online?

Many providers offer an online route, but eligibility and verification vary. Check the official procedure for your specific service. If online cancellation is unavailable, ask about shop or other supported routes.

Can I choose a future cancellation date?

Ask the provider. Do not assume your request can be scheduled. Check the effective date before submitting and arrange another way to communicate.

Will cancellation be free?

Check your plan, contract start date and current terms. Ask about cancellation charges, final-month billing and remaining phone payments. Do not assume a fee-free or prorated result.

Can I keep my number when switching to another carrier?

For a transfer to another Japanese carrier, check MNP instructions first. Do not submit an ordinary cancellation before understanding the transfer sequence.

Does deleting my eSIM end the contract?

Do not treat deleting an eSIM or removing a physical SIM as cancellation. Complete the provider’s required procedure and save confirmation.

What if I have already left Japan?

Contact the provider through its official support or account route. Ask which remote procedures and verification methods are available and how to handle final billing. Departure itself does not confirm termination.

Can LifeAdmin cancel the line on my behalf?

LifeAdmin communicates the request and confirms the next step. The provider may require your direct consent, online submission, documents or shop visit. Cancellation and any particular outcome are not guaranteed.
