Bringing Your Spouse or Child (Designated Activity No. 54)

Bringing Your Spouse or Child (Designated Activity No. 54) The eligibility rules, the timing rules, and what your family can't do

Family accompaniment on this visa comes with its own eligibility list, its own insurance requirement — and a set of timing rules that trip people up more than the paperwork does. Here's the full picture.

⚠️ Your family can't arrive before you, and can't stay after you leave. This status is entirely dependent on yours. Your spouse or child cannot enter Japan ahead of you, and if you depart Japan, they cannot remain behind on their own.

The Basics

What Designated Activity No. 54 Actually Is

Your spouse or child can accompany you under a separate status — Designated Activity No. 54 — issued alongside your own Designated Activity No. 53. It follows the same overall framework: up to 6 months, non-renewable, no residence card issued.

Eligibility

Three Conditions for Your Family Member

1. Nationality — checked against a different, longer list Your spouse or child's nationality is checked independently against the Designated Activity No. 54 country list — which includes some countries not on your own eligibility list, and excludes a few that are. Don't assume their eligibility just because yours is confirmed.

2. Insurance — required separately for each family member Each accompanying family member needs their own qualifying insurance (or documented family coverage under your policy), meeting the same ¥10M treatment + death benefit requirement as your own.

3. Proof of relationship Marriage certificate (for a spouse) or birth certificate (for a child), with a Japanese translation attached, plus a copy of your own passport.

Timing Rules

The Rules Most Guides Miss

Situation Allowed?
Family enters Japan at the same time as you ✅ Yes
Family enters Japan after you're already there ✅ Yes
Family enters Japan before you do ❌ Not allowed
You depart Japan; family stays behind ❌ Not allowed
Family's 6-month period runs separately from yours ❌ No — tied to your status

In practice: plan your family's travel to Japan for the same time as yours or later — never earlier — and understand that their permitted stay ends when yours does, regardless of the date on their own documents.

Work Restriction

Your Family Cannot Work in Japan — No Exceptions

Unlike some other dependent visa categories, there's no process to apply for permission to work part-time on this status (資格外活動許可 isn't available here). Your spouse cannot take a part-time job, freelance for a Japan-based client, or otherwise earn income locally during your stay.

Children & School

A Practical Note on Schooling

Japanese public schools generally enroll students based on residency registration (住民票) tied to a registered address — something this visa doesn't provide for any family member. Combined with the 6-month, non-renewable stay, most families in this situation lean toward international schools, private schools with more flexible enrollment policies, or continuing online/home schooling during the stay, rather than public school enrollment. Confirm directly with your local school board or chosen school, since practices can vary by municipality.

Frequently Asked

FAQ

Can my spouse apply for permission to work part-time?

No. There's no resident-activity permit process available for this status, unlike some other dependent visa categories. Your spouse cannot work in Japan under any arrangement during this stay.

What if my spouse's nationality isn't on the family eligibility list, but mine is?

Then they cannot accompany you under this status, regardless of your own eligibility. Check both lists independently before making any plans.

Can my family stay in Japan if I need to leave early?

No — their status is entirely dependent on yours. If you depart Japan, they cannot remain on their own under this status.

Does my child need their own insurance policy, or can they be added to mine?

Either works, as long as the coverage for each family member meets the full requirement (¥10M+ treatment costs, death benefit, full stay duration) — check with your insurer whether they offer family coverage or require separate policies.
