The three main categories causing the longest delays:

The bank account risk nobody talks about
This is catching many people off guard in 2026. Some major Japanese banks have started flagging or freezing accounts when they detect that a customer's visa status is "under review."
What to do if your bank asks about your visa status
Bring your receipt of application (申請受理証明書) and the extension sticker to your branch. This proves your legal stay. Do not ignore letters from your bank during this period.
What you can do to speed things up
- Submit complete documentation from the start. Missing documents are the #1 cause of delays. Use the official checklist for your visa category.
- Apply early. You can apply up to 3 months before your visa expires. The earlier you apply, the more buffer you have.
- Use a certified administrative scrivener. Applications reviewed by licensed professionals are processed faster on average — and rejection rates are significantly lower.
- Choose the right application window. April–June and October–December are peak periods. If possible, apply outside these windows.
Category 1 & 2 companies have a faster track
If your employer is a listed company or large corporation (Category 1 or 2), your renewal is processed on a simplified track with shorter wait times. Check your company's category at the Immigration Bureau website.
