VisaSHOGUN FAQ — How Early Can I Apply for Visa Renewal in Japan?
When can you apply for visa extension or renewal in Japan? The standard 3-month window, why applying early matters given processing times, and what happens if you're outside the window.
Direct answer
If your current period of stay is six months or longer, you can generally apply to extend it from about three months before the expiry date shown on your residence card.
From September 18, 2026, ISA also asks residence-card holders who want a decision before the current period expires to aim to file between three months and 45 days before expiry, except for separately identified cases. This 45-day point is practical planning guidance. It is not a new legal deadline and it does not mean a later application filed before expiry is automatically invalid.
What you need to know
Check the current official document list before the window opens, because sponsor documents and municipal certificates can take time to obtain. Processing time varies by status and case, so do not plan around a fixed “four-to-six-week” estimate.
If you file a qualifying renewal application before expiry and no decision has been made, the special-period rule may allow you to remain under the existing status until the decision or two months after the original expiry date, whichever comes first. Activities remain limited by the existing status and conditions.
Exception: can you file earlier?
Earlier filing may be accepted where genuinely unavoidable special circumstances apply. Timing also differs for some shorter periods of stay and separately identified cases. Contact the competent regional immigration office before relying on an earlier filing date.
