J-Find to Work Visa in Japan: What to Do After You Get a Job

J-FIND · AFTER THE OFFER

You found a job. Now match it to the right status.

The next application is not chosen by the words “J-Find” or “work visa.” It depends on your actual duties, employer, qualifications and the rules of the status you are moving into.

Direct answer: In many cases, a J-Find holder who accepts ongoing employment will need to change to the status of residence that covers that work. Do not begin duties outside the scope of your current Designated Activities before the required permission or change is in place.
01 · IDENTIFY THE ROUTE

Common destinations after J-Find

Possible status Typical fit Key point
Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services Many professional roles in technology, business, design, translation and international services. The specific duties and your academic/professional background must fit the category.
Highly Skilled Professional Eligible advanced professional roles where the points and employment conditions are met. Calculate points with evidence; J-Find eligibility does not automatically mean HSP eligibility.
Instructor Teaching at qualifying educational institutions. School type and duties matter; other teaching arrangements may use a different category.
Skilled Labor Specified skilled occupations with the required experience. This is not a general category for any skilled job.
Business Manager Managing a qualifying business in Japan. Business substance, premises, capital/scale and current requirements must be checked separately.
The job title is not enough.“Marketing,” “consultant,” “engineer” or “manager” can cover very different duties. Immigration looks at the actual work, contract, employer and applicant background.
02 · CHANGE OF STATUS

A practical sequence

Obtain a detailed offer and job description

Confirm duties, salary, hours, work location, employer and proposed start date.

Map the role to a status

Check the legal category, your degree or experience, and whether the employer can provide the required documents.

Prepare applicant and employer evidence

Documents vary by category and employer classification. Avoid relying on a generic checklist alone.

File before your J-Find period expires

Leave enough time for corrections or additional-document requests. Keep proof of filing and follow the rules applying while the case is pending.

Start the new activity at the correct time

Do not assume the offer or filing receipt itself authorizes every new duty. Confirm when the approved activity can begin.

03 · AVOID THESE MISTAKES

The gaps that delay otherwise good offers

Start date set too earlyThe contract assumes immediate work even though the immigration step has not been completed.
Vague or mismatched dutiesThe title sounds professional, but the description is too broad or includes work outside the intended status.
Employer documents requested lateThe company is willing to hire but has not prepared the corporate evidence needed for the application.
Degree assumptionsA top-ranked university degree helped with J-Find, but the new status has its own education or experience test.
