Japan Work Visas
The Complete 2026 Guide
Every visa type explained — requirements, documents, processing times, and what the 2026 rule changes mean for you. Find your situation and know exactly what to do next.
What Is a Japan Work Visa?
Japan does not issue a single "work visa." Instead, each foreign national holds a Status of Residence (在留資格) that defines what type of work they can do and for how long. The visa stamp in your passport is only used to enter Japan — your residence card (在留カード) is what governs your work rights on an ongoing basis.
This page covers every major work-related status: what it permits, who qualifies, how to renew it, and what to do when life events like job changes or layoffs create complications.

This is the most common work status in Japan, covering IT, engineering, marketing, HR, finance, interpretation, and most other white-collar professional roles. You need a university degree (or 10 years of relevant experience) and the work must match your academic background.

Go to HSP Points Guide →For specific industries facing labor shortages: food service, construction, agriculture, care work, and others. SSW Type 1 has a 5-year cumulative limit and does not lead to PR. SSW Type 2 is renewable and PR-eligible.
Go to Specified Skilled Worker Guide →For founders, directors, and business owners. Major changes in October 2025: capital requirement raised from ¥5M to ¥30M, 2 full-time employees now required, JLPT N3 added as a requirement.
Go to Business Manager Visa Guide →For employees transferring from an overseas office to a Japanese subsidiary or parent company. You must have worked for the same corporate group for at least 1 year and your Japan role must match your overseas role.
Go to Intra-Company Transferee Guide →Spouse and dependent visas have no work restrictions — you can work for any employer in any industry. The key focus is proving the relationship is genuine. Divorce and separation require immediate attention.
Go to Spouse Visa Guide →PR removes all work restrictions and eliminates the renewal cycle. Major 2026/2027 rule changes: 5-year visa required to apply (from April 2027), naturalization now requires 10 years. See the full PR guide for details.
