What are Japan's family visas?
Japan has two separate visa categories for family, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes people make.
"日本人の配偶者等" (Spouse or Child of Japanese National) is for people married to a Japanese citizen, or the child of one. It comes with almost no work restrictions — you can work in any job, any industry, just like a Japanese citizen.
"家族滞在" (Dependent Visa) is for the spouse and children of someone in Japan on a work or student visa (not a Japanese citizen). It is fundamentally a non-working visa. Any work requires separate permission and is capped at 28 hours per week.
This page covers both paths: eligibility, required documents, common rejection reasons, what changes at major life events, and how family visas connect to Permanent Residency.

Spouse Visa vs. Dependent Visa — at a Glance
These are two entirely different visa categories with different rules. Confirming which one applies to you is the first step.
| 日本人の配偶者等 (Spouse of Japanese National) | 家族滞在 (Dependent Visa) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Spouse or child of a Japanese citizen | Spouse or child of a foreign work/student visa holder |
| Work | Unrestricted — any job, any industry | Not permitted without 資格外活動許可; capped at 28 hrs/week |
| Visa length | 6 months / 1 / 3 / 5 years | Tied to the sponsor's visa — max 5 years, never longer than the sponsor's period |
| Tied to sponsor? | No — independent status | Yes — expires if the sponsor's visa ends |
| Path to PR | Counts toward the 10-year rule; 1-year fast track if married 3+ years to a Japanese national | Counts toward residency, but doesn't itself grant an independent PR path |
What's Reviewed for Each Visa
Immigration reviews different things depending on which category you're in. Both lists matter if your household includes both a Japanese-citizen spouse and dependent children from a prior status.
