Moving out of Japan · Practical guide
Choose your final service date, find the right provider and arrange your last bill. Start online—or get help if a Japanese phone call is holding you up.
Direct answer
Request a stop date with your electricity provider.
Check your latest bill to identify the company you pay. Use its official moving-out form or contact desk to request the last day of service, then save the confirmation and arrange the final payment.
Moving out of your apartment does not itself cancel electricity. If electricity is included in your rent, confirm with the management company who handles it.
01 · Prepare
Before you start
- Find the company on your bill. Use your electricity retailer’s official website. The local grid operator may be a different company.
- Choose the last day you need power. Allow for cleaning, your move and any inspection. Confirm timing if you need power throughout the day.
- Have your account details ready. Prepare the account holder’s name, service address, customer number if available, requested stop date and contact details.
- Decide how to pay the final bill. Ask what happens if you will be abroad or your Japanese bank account is closing.
Request the stop as soon as your moving date is settled. Booking windows and last-minute availability vary by provider; there is no single deadline for all of Japan.
02 · Choose your next step
How would you like to handle it?
03 · Do it yourself
Try online cancellation first.
On the provider’s website, look for moving / 引越し and stop service / 使用停止. Select the service at your current address and enter the requested stop date. If you are leaving Japan, check that you are requesting a stop rather than starting service at another Japanese address.
Keep the completion email or reference number. Check that the address and date are correct, and whether the provider needs anything else from you.

Need to call? Check free language support.
TEPCO offers telephone interpretation in English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. The number and menu option depend on your rate plan; use the current instructions on its English page.

Find your provider’s official moving page
Use the retailer named on your bill, even if you live in another company’s usual service area. These are examples, not a complete list.
| Provider | Official procedure | Linked page language |
|---|---|---|
| TEPCO Energy Partner | Moving / stop service → | Japanese; English contact options above |
| Kansai Electric Power | Moving / stop service → | Japanese |
| Chubu Electric Power Miraiz | Moving / stop service → | Japanese |
Forms, language support, booking windows and contract terms differ. If your retailer is not listed, use its official website or contact details printed on your bill.
A simple Japanese request
引っ越しのため、電気の使用を停止したいです。最終使用日は〇月〇日です。
“I’m moving out and would like to stop my electricity service. My last day of use is [month/day].”
Replace the date, then have your account holder’s name, address and customer number ready.
Confirm these before ending the call
- The accepted stop date and any appointment or access requirement.
- How and when the final bill will be paid.
- A contact method that still works after you leave Japan.
- Any remaining action or confirmation number.
LifeAdmin · Japanese call support
Still blocked by the Japanese call?
LifeAdmin can contact one electricity provider, communicate your moving-out request and confirm the procedure. You receive a written English summary of the result and what to do next.
- ¥2,980 · one organization, one clear purpose
- Up to two call attempts
- Normally reviewed within one business day; calls during Japanese business hours
What we’ll need from you
- Your customer number (if available)
- The account holder’s name and service address
- Your requested stop date and a contact method that works after departure
- Times when you can join a call for consent or identity verification, if the provider requires it
Please provide these through the task form. If the provider requires your participation, we’ll explain what you need to do; LifeAdmin cannot bypass its verification rules.
Leaving in less than 3 days? Contact your provider directly using its online form or language support first. LifeAdmin normally reviews requests within one business day, so help may not be available before your departure. Same-day completion is not guaranteed.

04 · Check the details
Your final bill still needs a plan.
Stopping service does not erase unpaid charges. For TEPCO, the final usage bill uses the current payment method. If you are closing the linked bank account or leaving before the bill arrives, contact the provider to confirm an arrangement that will work.
Will someone need to visit?
TEPCO says electricity start and stop procedures generally do not require attendance, but access or equipment conditions can make a visit necessary. Confirm your own provider’s requirements before returning the keys.
05 · Keep your move on track
Electricity is one part of your move.
Use this quick list to check what still needs your attention. Tick an item once it is arranged; the ticks apply to this visit.

Questions before you leave
Can I cancel electricity online?
Check your retailer’s official website. TEPCO provides online moving and stop-service procedures. Available methods and required details vary by company and contract.
When should I arrange the stop date?
Begin once your moving date is settled, within your provider’s booking window. Keep power for the time you still need it and confirm the last-minute cutoff directly with the provider.
Do I have to call in Japanese?
Not always. An online form or multilingual contact desk may be enough. TEPCO publishes telephone interpretation options on its English website.
What if my landlord pays for electricity?
Check your lease or ask the management company. If the supply is managed by them and included in your rent, confirm the move-out procedure with them before contacting a retailer.
Can LifeAdmin guarantee the cancellation?
No. LifeAdmin provides communication support within the agreed scope. Your provider controls the procedure and may require your consent, verification or direct action.
