Unlike permanent residents, most foreign residents in Japan must periodically renew their period of stay to continue living here legally. Missing a deadline, submitting incomplete documents, or failing to meet current requirements can lead to serious consequences — including loss of legal status.

What Is Visa Renewal in Japan?
What people call "visa renewal" is officially called an Extension of Period of Stay (在留期間更新許可申請). The procedure allows you to continue living in Japan under your current Status of Residence after your current period of stay expires.
It is important to understand the difference between two things that are often confused:
| Term | What It Means | What You Manage |
|---|---|---|
| Visa (査証) | Stamp in passport permitting entry into Japan — issued by Japanese embassy abroad | Not this — this was handled when you first came to Japan |
| Status of Residence (在留資格) | Legal category defining your permitted activities and period of stay — shown on your residence card | Yes — this is what you renew |
Common statuses that require periodic renewal include:
- Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services (技人国) — the most common work status
- Highly Skilled Professional (高度専門職)
- Business Manager (経営・管理)
- Intra-Company Transferee (企業内転勤)
- Student (留学)
- Dependent (家族滞在)
- Spouse or Child of Japanese National (日本人の配偶者等)
- Long-Term Resident (定住者)
Most renewals are approved. The key is applying on time with complete documentation and a clean compliance record — particularly regarding tax and social insurance payments.
When Can You Apply for Visa Renewal?
Applications can be submitted from approximately 3 months before the expiration date shown on your residence card. In 2026, with processing times significantly longer than in previous years, applying on the first possible day is no longer just a suggestion — it is the recommended standard.
Many foreign residents wait until 4–6 weeks before expiration. Given 2026 processing times of 2–4 months (standard) and 4–6 months (complex cases), this leaves no buffer for additional document requests or delays.

Who Is Eligible for Renewal?
Immigration authorities assess whether you continue to meet the requirements of your current status. There are three main areas of evaluation:
① Activity Compliance
You must continue performing the activities permitted by your status. For example: work visa holders must continue doing the type of professional work their status covers; students must be enrolled and attending; spouse visa holders must maintain their qualifying relationship.
② Legal and Administrative Compliance
Depending on your status and circumstances, ISA may review matters including:
- Income and residence-tax payment records, where relevant
- Pension and social-insurance enrollment or payment records, where relevant
- Health-insurance enrollment or payment records, where relevant
- No criminal record or immigration violations
- No history of overstay or unauthorized work
- All required notifications filed (e.g., 14-day job change notification)
③ Financial Stability
Financial circumstances may be considered in light of the status of residence, household and employment situation. ISA does not publish a universal annual-income threshold for all work-visa renewals, so do not treat a single figure as a guaranteed approval standard.
The supporting documents can differ according to your employer’s category and whether your employment changed. Use the Category 1–4 employer document checklist → and confirm the current ISA list for your status before filing.

How Long Does Visa Renewal Take?
There is no single processing time that applies to every renewal. Timing varies by status, bureau, season, whether additional documents are requested and the facts of the case. A Certificate of Eligibility application for a new arrival is a different procedure and should not be used as the expected timeline for an extension of period of stay.
Use ISA’s latest published processing-period information and allow extra time for employer or municipal documents. A past average is not a deadline or a guarantee for an individual application.
Receiving a request for additional documents does not automatically mean there is a problem. It can occur during review and does not by itself show the outcome. Respond by the stated deadline and provide complete, accurate documents.
If a qualifying extension application is accepted before your current period expires and no decision has been made, you may generally remain under your existing status until the decision is made or until two months after the original expiry date, whichever comes first. Your permitted activities remain subject to your existing status. Keep the application receipt or online-application record and confirm your individual situation with ISA.
