How to Set Up Home Internet in Japan

Check your building, choose the correct application route and confirm the installation date. Use official provider guides—or get help when a Japanese enquiry call is blocking the next step.

Direct answer

Check the building before you apply.

Ask management whether internet is included, which connections are available in your room and whether installation needs permission. Then check the provider’s address eligibility, complete its application and confirm any work or equipment delivery. Keep the service-start notice and follow the official connection guide.

An application is not a confirmed connection date. Installation, equipment and setup may be separate steps. Ask the provider when you can actually start using the service.

01 · Prepare

Know what is already in your apartment.

  1. Check included internet. Ask management whether a usable connection is included in rent, which company handles it and what setup instructions you need.
  2. Check the exact address. Prepare the postal code, building name, room number and photos of relevant sockets if the provider asks.
  3. Separate a new application from a move or switch. If you already have a contract, ask that provider which route applies before cancelling it.
  4. Check access and permission. Note the key handover date, auto-lock access and management’s process for any installation approval.
  5. Prepare your contact and timing. Have a reachable phone number, email, desired start date and possible appointment windows.
Need internet immediately? Confirm the actual activation date before relying on a fixed line for work or study. If you need a temporary connection, check a mobile or home-router option’s coverage, data limits, charges and minimum commitment through the Internet & Mobile guide.

While you wait · Mobile Wi-Fi

Need a connection before the fixed line opens?

You can browse mobile Wi-Fi router hardware on Amazon. Before buying, check whether a SIM or data plan is included, the compatible network and bands, and coverage at your address. A router purchase alone may not provide an active internet service. Check delivery, total costs and any separate plan’s conditions.

02 · Choose your next step

How would you like to handle it?

03 · Do it yourself

Start with the company handling your application.

These are examples of official routes. Check the address and service you are applying for. If your contract is with a different retail provider, use that company’s contact even if the underlying line is operated by NTT.

Official application and installation guides
Provider Start here Useful check
NTT East / FLET’S Application overview (Japanese) Check address availability, then the application and installation route.
NTT West / FLET’S Application-to-use guide (English) Includes English telephone support. FLET’S also needs an internet service provider contract.
SoftBank Hikari Application / opening flow (Japanese) Select new application, FLET’S conversion or provider switch as appropriate.
au Hikari / KDDI Applications and changes (Japanese) Check your address and service type. Use the existing-application contact for a request already underway.

Home fiber · Compare an option

Considering a new home internet contract?

BIGLOBE Hikari is one option to compare for your address. Check the available service, current rates, installation costs, contract conditions and expected start date before applying. Being within a service area does not guarantee that your building can be connected.

Use English support where it is available.

NTT West’s English guide lists 0120-064-337 for applications and enquiries in English, Portuguese, Chinese and Korean. It currently lists 9am–5pm on weekdays, excluding holidays and 29 December–3 January. Check the guide’s current hours. This is a West Japan service route, not nationwide support for every provider.

Check what the contract includes.

NTT West’s FLET’S guide explains that an internet service provider contract is also needed. Ask whether your selected offer includes both the line and ISP, and what router or Wi-Fi equipment is included. Check monthly charges, installation costs, optional services, commitment and cancellation conditions directly with the provider before agreeing.

Confirm whether a technician needs access.

NTT East’s apartment installation guide distinguishes a visit from installation without a visit, depending on the premises. A socket in the room does not by itself confirm your application’s work requirements.

For au Hikari Home 10 / 5 Gbps, au requires attendance and says renters need the building owner’s consent before work. Ask about the rules for your particular service and property.

SoftBank’s opening guide asks for someone who can decide the equipment location to attend a visit. Some conversions or switches may not need work, while others do. Confirm your own booking and follow the supplied setup instructions.

Ask management about the building

この部屋では、インターネットは家賃に含まれていますか?自分で契約する場合、利用できる回線と、工事の許可が必要かどうかを教えてください。

“Is internet included in this room’s rent? If I arrange my own contract, which connections are available, and do I need permission for installation?”

Ask the provider about availability and work

住所は〇〇、建物名と部屋番号は〇〇です。この部屋で利用できますか?工事と立ち会いが必要か、利用開始までの手続きを教えてください。

“My address, building and room are [details]. Is service available here? Please explain the steps, including any work and attendance.”

Confirm an application or installation date

インターネットの申込み状況を確認したいです。受付番号は〇〇です。工事日は確定していますか?追加で必要な手続きと、実際に利用できる予定日を教えてください。

“Please check my application, reference [number]. Is the installation date confirmed? What still needs action, and when is service expected to be usable?”

Before ending the call, confirm these points.

  • The contracting company, service and exact address
  • Application status and any personal documents or steps still needed
  • Whether work, management permission or attendance is required
  • The confirmed appointment, access instructions and delivery address
  • The expected usable date, setup guide and reference

LifeAdmin · Japanese call support

Need help confirming your internet application?

LifeAdmin can communicate with one provider about requirements, an existing application or an installation appointment. You receive a written English summary of the result and any action still needed.

  • ¥2,980 · one organization, one clear purpose
  • Up to two call attempts
  • Normally reviewed within one business day; calls during Japanese business hours

What we’ll need from you

  • The company’s name and official phone number
  • The applicant or contract holder’s name and service address
  • Any application reference or customer number
  • Your requested date, key access and relevant appointment details
  • One clear question and times you can join for consent or verification

Provide relevant details through the task form. Keep account passwords, connection credentials, identity-document uploads and full payment details for the provider’s official process. The provider may need to speak personally with you.

Need a connection in less than 3 days? Contact the provider directly first and arrange a suitable temporary option if needed. LifeAdmin may not be available in time, and installation slots or activation are not guaranteed.

This is communication support. You choose the plan and personally complete the contract, verification and payment. LifeAdmin does not perform installation, device setup or speed testing, or guarantee approval, availability or an earlier appointment. Calling the provider and management company would involve two separate organizations.

04 · After applying

Keep delivery, installation and setup separate.

If you are waiting for a date

Ask what is still pending: address confirmation, documents, building access or scheduling. Keep your reference and the result of each enquiry. A requested date may still need confirmation.

If your move date changes

Ask the provider to confirm the change procedure, appointment and equipment delivery address. Keep the new confirmation before making plans around it.

If equipment does not arrive

Check the provider’s dispatch information and delivery address. If a carrier left a notice, use the missed delivery guide. Receiving a router alone does not establish that the line is active.

If installation is complete but you cannot connect

Use the official setup guide and the support contact for the contracted service. Describe which step fails and any displayed error. Keep passwords private; LifeAdmin can ask about the next support step but does not troubleshoot your devices.

05 · Keep your move on track

Is your connection ready to use?

Tick each item once arranged. The ticks apply to this visit.

Continue with the right moving guide.

Already have a contract? Confirm whether relocation or switching applies before using a cancellation route.

Questions

Home internet: common questions

Does a fiber socket mean I can use internet immediately?

Confirm the provider’s address eligibility and application-specific work requirements. The socket alone does not confirm an active contract or usable date.

Do all installations need someone at home?

No. NTT East distinguishes work with and without a visit. Ask which applies to your application and confirm access or attendance requirements.

Is English telephone support available?

NTT West lists an English application and enquiry route. Check the correct company and region; availability differs by provider.

Should I cancel my old internet before applying?

First ask whether moving or switching is the correct route. Confirm continuity, charges and equipment return with the relevant companies.

Can LifeAdmin apply or set up my router for me?

LifeAdmin communicates and confirms one clear enquiry. You complete contractual and personal steps, and use the provider’s technical support for setup.

One clear next step

Unclear about your opening date?

Prepare the company, address and reference. LifeAdmin can communicate your question and confirm what needs to happen next.
