Japanese Language School Intake Dates in Japan: Plan Your 2027 Start
April and October are common start months; some schools also admit in January and July. The application clock begins much earlier for a long-term Student status route. Use this guide to shortlist a course, then verify its actual deadline.
Quick answer: Begin researching 10–12 months before a long-term course. Study in Japan suggests choosing a school by about seven months before entry and applying roughly five to seven months before the start. The school’s own deadline, campus, course and document rules control your actual application.
April, July, October or January?
| Start month | What to know | Your first check |
|---|---|---|
| April | A common long-term intake. Some longer academic preparation routes align with Japan’s academic year. | Does this campus offer your desired course in April, and is its application window still open? |
| July | Available at some schools and courses; not a universal option. | Will the course length, level and future study goal work with a July start? |
| October | Another common long-term intake. | How does an October start affect your course end date and any university application plan? |
| January | Available at some schools, often with a course length different from an April entry. | Does the specific campus accept January entry at your Japanese level? |
Study in Japan lists April and October as common language-school admissions and notes that some schools also start in January or July. Do not assume every course has four intakes.
A real application-window example
Human Academy Japanese Language School publishes the following recurring application periods for long-term study at its Tokyo and Osaka campuses. They are school-specific examples, not nationwide deadlines. The school says periods can change by year and Japanese-level requirements can vary by intake.
| Target intake | Published application period | Typical course length shown |
|---|---|---|
| January | June 1 – August 31 of the previous year | 1 year 3 months |
| April | July 1 – October 31 of the previous year | 2 years |
| July | November 1 of the previous year – February 28 | 1 year 9 months |
| October | January 15 – April 30 of the same year | 1 year 6 months |

Plan backward from your start month
10–12 months before
Choose your goal and city. Request information from several schools; ask which campus, course and intake fits your status and Japanese level.
About 7 months before
Set your shortlist and check each school’s application calendar. Ask about required education, Japanese study history, funding evidence and document translations.
About 5–7 months before
Submit the school’s application and supporting documents within its actual deadline. A school may close earlier or use a different schedule from these planning benchmarks.
After acceptance
Follow the school’s payment and COE process. After the COE is issued, apply for a visa where required, then arrange housing and travel.

Applying for a short course or while already living in Japan?
A weekly, short-term or resident course may follow a different application process. Do not copy a long-term COE timetable for a short visit. Confirm the course’s available starts and your own status of residence with the school. Compare short-term Tokyo options or choose your situation in School Finder.
Questions to send before you apply
- Is the course open for my preferred month at this campus?
- What is the current application deadline and when must original documents arrive?
- What Japanese level, education and financial documents are required?
- Is this a long-term course that can support a Student status application, or a separate short/resident course?
- What are the full fees, payment deadlines and refund terms?

Common questions
Is April the only time to start Japanese language school?
No. October is common too, and some schools offer January and July. The available month depends on the specific course and campus.
Can I apply a few weeks before a Student-route course?
Do not assume so. A long-term application usually involves school admission and immigration documents months ahead of classes. Ask the school about its current deadline immediately.
Does every school have the same deadline for 2027?
No. Even published recurring windows can change. Confirm the year, campus, course, document deadline and available seats directly with each school.
What if I missed my preferred intake?
Ask whether another intake or a separate short/resident course fits your situation. Check the consequences for course duration and future study plans before changing your target month.
